Author: Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec
(Born Nov. 24, 1864,
Albi, France — died Sept. 9,
1901, Malromé)
When he was 12, he broke his left leg
and at 14 his right leg. The bones don’t
heal properly and his legs stopped growing. During his convalescence, he studied with
French academic painters.
He observed
and painted the Parisian nightlife and the French world of entertainment in the
1890s. His use of free-flowing, expressive line, resulted in highly rhythmical compositions. The extreme simplification in
outline and movement and the use of large color areas make his posters some of
his most powerful works.
