Painter Lucien Freud is dead

He was one of the most important contemporary painters, his paintings achieved in his lifetime million prizes. At the age of 88 years, Lucian Freud, has died past Saturday.
Lucian Freud was born in 1922 in Berlin. His father, Ernst Freud, an architect, was the youngest son of the Viennese psychoanalyst. Early thirties, the family fled from the Nazis to London where Lucian Freud received British citizenship. He studied at the Central School of Art and at Goldsmith's College, London. At first, the young painter employed by the Surrealists. In the fifties-years, he turned to the portrait and nude painting.

"You might not know who Joaquin Salvador Lavado is. You might not be familiar with his nickname “Quino” either. But I’m sure that at some point of your life you’ve bumped into his creation, Mafalda (not to be confused with the Hogwarts witch).

Today is Quino’s 80^th birthday and we wanted to thank him for having drawn a friend with which many of us grew up.

Born in the province of Mendoza, Argentina, in 1932, Quino was given his nickname to differentiate him from other members of his family. In 1945, soon after finishing high school, Quino enrolled into college to learn how to draw. He begun traveling back and forth to Buenos Aires trying to get his cartoons published in newspapers, but to little success.

In 1963, his first book of comics, Mundo Quino, was published. An advertising company was looking for a cartoonist to create a strip for a home appliances brand called Mansfield.

The strip had to be a mix between Blondie and Peanuts and the characters’ names had to begin with the brand’s letters. Quino created Mafalda and her friends, and although the ad campaign never took off, Quino begun the adventures of this little girl.

The comic ran in different newspapers from 1964 to 1973 and was translated into more than 30 languages. When Quino was asked why he thought Mafalda wasn’t that popular in English-speaking countries his response was that she was “too Latin American.”

Sir Joshua Reynolds was born on 16 July 1723

Joshua Reynolds was born in the town of Plympton (now a suburb of the city of Plymouth), on 16 July 1723. He was the youngest of seven sons born to the Reverend Samuel Reynolds, a local Grammar School master, and his wife Theophilia.

Reynolds' talent as an artist was clear from an early age and he went on to become one of Britain's finest and most fashionable portrait painters - mixing with some of the 18th century's best-known 'celebrities', enjoying the patronage of some of the South West's most wealthy landowning families and becoming the founding President of famous London arts institute, the Royal Academy.
