"You might not know who Joaquin Salvador Lavado is. You might not be familiar with his nickname “Quino” either. But I’m sure that at some point of your life you’ve bumped into his creation, Mafalda (not to be confused with the Hogwarts witch).
Today is Quino’s 80th birthday and we wanted to thank him for having drawn a friend with which many of us grew up.
Born in the province of Mendoza, Argentina, in 1932, Quino was given his nickname to differentiate him from other members of his family. In 1945, soon after finishing high school, Quino enrolled into college to learn how to draw. He begun traveling back and forth to Buenos Aires trying to get his cartoons published in newspapers, but to little success.
In 1963, his first book of comics, Mundo Quino, was published. An advertising company was looking for a cartoonist to create a strip for a home appliances brand called Mansfield.
The strip had to be a mix between Blondie and Peanuts and the characters’ names had to begin with the brand’s letters. Quino created Mafalda and her friends, and although the ad campaign never took off, Quino begun the adventures of this little girl.
The comic ran in different newspapers from 1964 to 1973 and was translated into more than 30 languages. When Quino was asked why he thought Mafalda wasn’t that popular in English-speaking countries his response was that she was “too Latin American.”

Are you going to teach me in a school?
Are you going to make me sit in a desk all day?
Is this what you are going to use to teach me with?
Is this what you are going to use to teach me with? (echo)
Do you know how to use a computer?

Are you going to learn how to use the technology?
I am a digital native.
Do computers scare you?
Are you afraid to use them?
Have you been on facebook?
Have you been on twitter?
Have you been surfing?
Do you even know what is on the internet?
Are you going to be my teacher?
Or just that textbook?
Because I want to know...
what the world has to offer
And if you are not on the internet...
and know nothing about computers.
you can't be my teacher!
I said you can't be my teacher.
Make room for somebody who knows how to use the internet.

Do you think you are preparing me for the
world that I have to live in?

A very beautiful song
Although, sometimes Neil Young forgets the lyrics, that´s Pop Music turned into Fine Art. Absolutely, a gorgeous poem, a delicious song.
They were hiding behind hay bales,
They were planting in the full moon
They had given all they had for something new
But the light of day was on them,
They could see the thrashers coming
And the water shone like diamonds in the dew.
And I was just getting up, hit the road before it's light
Trying to catch an hour on the sun
When I saw those thrashers rolling by,
Looking more than two lanes wide
I was feelin' like my day had just begun.
Where the eagle glides ascending
There's an ancient river bending
Down the timeless gorge of changes
Where sleeplessness awaits
I searched out my companions,
Who were lost in crystal canyons
When the aimless blade of science
Slashed the pearly gates.
It was then I knew I'd had enough,
Burned my credit card for fuel
Headed out to where the pavement turns to sand
With a one-way ticket to the land of truth
And my suitcase in my hand
How I lost my friends I still don't understand.
They had the best selection,
They were poisoned with protection
There was nothing that they needed,
Nothing left to find
They were lost in rock formations
Or became park bench mutations
On the sidewalks and in the stations
They were waiting, waiting.
So I got bored and left them there,
They were just deadweight to me
Better down the road without that load
Brings back the time when I was eight or nine
I was watchin' my mama's T.V.,
It was that great Grand Canyon rescue episode.
Where the vulture glides descending
On an asphalt highway bending
Thru libraries and museums, galaxies and stars
Down the windy halls of friendship
To the rose clipped by the bullwhip
The motel of lost companions
Waits with heated pool and bar.
But me I'm not stopping there,
Got my own row left to hoe
Just another line in the field of time
When the thrashers comes, I'll be stuck in the sun
Like the dinosaurs in shrines
But I'll know the time has come
To give what's mine

Happy birthday to David Hockney, born on this day in 1937.
"David Hockney was born on July 9, 1937 in Bradford, Yorkshire -- the fourth of five children in a traditional middle class English family. Hockney's father was an accountant an an amateur artist and his mother was a devoted homemaker who instilled in her children a serious work ethic. Since graduating from Bradford School of Art in the late 1950s, Hockney has been making waves in the art world."
(...)"Hockey seems to know everyone worth knowing in the art world and beyond, and it's no surprise that he'll get lambasted and venerated in equal measure.
Despite the changing tides of the art world, Hockney continues pursuing his passion for representational landscapes, and employs traditional painting techniques or novel ones on his iPad. However, his relationship to technology isn't new; in 1985, the artist used the Quantel Paintbox to "paint" on a screen. Seventeen years later, he depicted the Queen in an iPad drawing to mark the Jubilee. His latest exhibition, entitled, "A Bigger Picture," is spending the summer and early fall at the Guggenheim in Bilbao after a successful run at the Royal Academy of Arts."

Marc Chagall´s birthday
Today marks the birthday of one of the art world's most beloved Marcs, Marc Chagall. The painter reached the hearts and imaginations of people worldwide with his expressive paintings that simultaneously harnessed the spirit of the avant-garde and the warmth of tradition. Chagall was born in the traditional neighborhood of Liozna, now part of the Russian Empire. As the oldest of nine children, Chagall grew up in a tight-knit Hasidic Jewish family where tradition played a heavy role. The mystical nature of Hasidic Judaism is evident in Chagall's imagery all throughout his life.
In 1908 Chagall moved to St. Petersburg to begin his artistic career. There he was inspired by the work of Paul Gauguin and the thrill of contemporary theater. He completed an apprenticeship and began to cultivate a naturalist style until he met his wife, Bella Rosenfeld.
Next Chagall moved to Paris where his days were spent studying the masters at the Louvre and exchanging ideas with budding artists like Guillaume Apollinaire and Fernand Léger. Chagall's familiar subject matter of his childhood neighborhood and childlike imagination was translated into the current modes of Fauvism, Cubism and Expressionism.

All the world´s a stage (William Shakespeare, from As you Like It 2/7)
All the world's a stage, And all the men and women merely players: They have their exits and their entrances; And one man in his time plays many parts, His acts being seven ages. At first the infant, Mewling and puking in the nurse's arms. And then the whining school-boy, with his satchel And shining morning face, creeping like snail Unwillingly to school. And then the lover, Sighing like furnace, with a woeful ballad Made to his mistress' eyebrow. Then a soldier, Full of strange oaths and bearded like the pard, Jealous in honour, sudden and quick in quarrel, Seeking the bubble reputation Even in the cannon's mouth. And then the justice, In fair round belly with good capon lined, With eyes severe and beard of formal cut, Full of wise saws and modern instances; And so he plays his part. The sixth age shifts Into the lean and slipper'd pantaloon, With spectacles on nose and pouch on side, His youthful hose, well saved, a world too wide For his shrunk shank; and his big manly voice, Turning again toward childish treble, pipes And whistles in his sound. Last scene of all, That ends this strange eventful history, Is second childishness and mere oblivion, Sans teeth, sans eyes, sans taste, sans everything.

BORN IN CHICAGO-TOM PETTY &THE HEARTBREAKERS
Tom Petty - Wildflowers (1994) Lyrics:
You belong among the wildflowersYou belong in a boat out at sea
Sail away, kill off the hours
You belong somewhere you feel free
Run away, find you a lover
Go away somewhere all bright and new
I have seen no other
Who compares with you
You belong among the wildflowers
You belong in a boat out at sea
You belong with your love on your arm
You belong somewhere you feel free
Run away, go find a lover
Run away, let your heart be your guide
You deserve the deepest of cover
You belong in that home by and by
You belong among the wildflowers
You belong somewhere close to me
Far away from your trouble and worry
You belong somewhere you feel free
You belong somewhere you feel free

RYTHM
Rhythm is a harmonic sequence of occupied space, free
space or repeated forms in an image. Any kind of sequence describes a
trajectory that organises a surface and gives the impression of dynamic
impulses. These trajectories can be horizontal, vertical, sloping, concurrent
in same point…
Uniform rhythm: this takes place when we repeat the same form in a constant and regular way.
Alternate rhythm: alternation is the repetition of a filled-space element followed by an empty one. The use of two or more elements with different positioning, shape, size, colour or texture accentuates the dynamism of the sequence.
Increasing and decreasing rhythm: we create this type of rhythm by successively changing size, thickness, height or colour.
Radial and concentric rhythm: when elements start as a central point and open outwards in a sequential way, rhythm is organised by imaginary radii. In the same way, concentric rhythm stars as the centre and the elements expand out towards the outside.
Modular rhythm: a module is a set of grouped forms that create a visual unit when put together. Just like rhythms using only one form, modular ones can create a uniform rhythm, an alternate rhythm with two or more modules, an increasing rhythm…
Symmetrical rhythm: this is another way of generating sequences either with just one form or with modular visual units.
Rhythmic surfaces: this rhythm can move in all directions, crossing and occupying the entire surface.
Free rhythm: to work with free rhythms easily, you should distribute the forms on an imaginary line that follows a sequential path. The only thing you should keep in mind is the repetition of the elements of the composition.

WESTHAFEN TOWER
Westhafen Tower is a skyscraper in the Gutleutviertel district of Frankfurt. The building, which has a height of 109 metres,
was designed by the architects Schneider & Schumacher and was completed in
2004. The tower, whose name literally means "Western Port Tower", is
one of the first buildings at the former Western Port.
From
the outside, the building is shaped like a cylinder, but the storeys are
square-shaped, creating 18 conservatories between the interior and exterior.
Each of the 30 floors above ground has a rentable area of approximately 820
square metres. One of the architectural features is the rhomboid facade
structure, with 3556 triangular panes of glass forming the outer skin.
The structure of the building's glass
facade resembles the rhombic surface of a typical Frankfurtian cider glass. Therefore, the building is popularly called das Gerippte, literally meaning
"the Rhombic".
A portion of the triangular segments of the glass can be automatically
opened for ventilation purposes in the bottom corner. The floors are heated
with under the windows recessed convectors as the cooling is done via a cooling
ceiling
