CASA DA MÚSICA
By: Marina Sutil
Casa da Música is located in Oporto and was inaugurated on April 15,
2005. The architect who has created is Rem Koolhaas.
On September 1, 1998, the Minister of Culture announced the construction
of Casa da Música, during the year 2001, as the European Capital of Culture.
Its location was set on March 8, 1999, in a municipal section of
Boavista, where construction began. The construction occurred in the next four
years as scheduled, and cost 100 million euros.
In September 2008, Casa da Música hosted the Oporto National Orchestra,
which participated in public exploratory presentations, where the music
performed was captured along with the expressive gestures of musicians and
directors. Scientific articles on special presentationsare also published in
Casa da Música 2007 and 2008.
The building is an asymmetrical polyhedron with nine floors of height.
The building is covered with white cement slabs, cut by large, wavy or flat
glass windows. The main entrance is in front of Avenida da Boavista, its
exterior surrounded by a yellow marble floor.
Minsk National Library
By Irene García Remis and Eva Martínez Hernández
The National
Library of Belarus in Minsk was design by Víctor Kramarenko and Vinogradov
Michael. It was developed in 2002 taking into account the bases of the Council
of Ministers of the Republic of Belarus, which in 1998 decreed the construction
of the building in the city of Minsk and it was finished in 2006 using postmodern
architecture, neofuturism and deconstructivism stiles. The main entrance is
addressed to Moscow, on Nezavisimosti Avenue 116, in Minsk, capital of Belarus and
it´s function is a national library. Its structural shell shaped diamond base
is covered with glass panels that shine for 24 hours a day as the gem it
represents. The architects Víctor Kramarenko and Vinogradov Michael wanted to
preserve and transmit this vision also at night. The building that is an
allegory of humanistic knowledge, the use of geometry and the return to the
vitruvian principles of the interior architecture, has as its main
architectural component a volume shaped "rhombicuboctahedron", an
octahedral rhombic cube, which rises on a base formed by three circumferences
staggered in height that house the reading rooms and public spaces. With a
total constructed area of 113,669 square meters, 54,960 correspond to the
deposit. The building reaches a height of 73.67 meters, distributed in 22
floors. We think that this building will help people to become more interested
in reading. We find it super nice and original and very well thought out since
there is no mistake inside or outside. We like that it has 19 different reading
rooms, terraces, a hyper deposit of books and more than 1500 work tables for
the total comfort of the consumers. There are also parkings and a viewpoint! It
could be better?!
